Thiruvananthapuram Zoo is one of the largest zoos in the country, spread across 30 acres in the temple city of Thiruvananthapuram. Set amidst lush, green surroundings, the zoo offers visitors a rare chance to enjoy serene, panoramic landscapes along with a diverse collection of wildlife. Established in 1859 by the former Maharaja of Travancore as an extension of the Museum, Thiruvananthapuram Zoo is among the oldest zoos in India. It was originally created to attract more visitors to the museum and has since grown into a major center for recreation and learning. Today, the zoo welcomes around fourteen lakh visitors each year and plays an important educational role by highlighting the close relationship between conserving natural habitats and sustaining life-supporting ecological processes. As part of its rich heritage, the zoo still preserves some traditional iron-barred, cement-floored enclosures with notable architectural value. However, to meet modern standards and changing needs, many outdated cages have been renovated or replaced with spacious, open-moated, and nature-immersive enclosures. This phased modernization program, launched in 1995–96, is still ongoing.
